Rajkot is a city on the banks of the Aji and Nyari rivers in the state of Gujarat. It is the 35th largest urban agglomeration in India, 18th cleanest city in India, and the 22nd fastest growing city in the world.

The main languages are Gujarati and Hindi. Many people speak and understand English, too.

It is best known as the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan or Prime Minister to the king of Saurashtra.

It is also famous for traditional sweets and dandiya raas.

Rajkot is frequently referred to as, Rangilu Rajput which means colourful Rajput. It is also known as Chitranagri – the City of Paintings.

Rajkot was a princely state of the British rule in India. It was founded by Thakur Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja of the Rajput Jadeja clan in 1620. It was named after Raju Sandhi, who was the co-founder along with Thakur Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja.

From 1720-1732, the Rajkot State was under the Mughal rule. During this time, it was called Masumabad.

1732 onwards, Rajkot was under Jadeja rule again until 1807, when it became a British protectorate.

Post 1807, the Rajkot rulers developed their state under the British into a haven for liberal learning, discourse and intellectual activities.

In 1930, Thakur Sahib Dharmendrasinhji Lakhajiraj stepped up to the throne of Rajkot. He was an unworthy ruler and spent more on himself than the development of the Rajkot state. This, along with the upcoming Second World War and the Partition of India hampered the state’s development for years.

The state merged with its neighbors to form the united state of Saurashtra in February, 1948. Rajkot became the capital of the Saurashtra State from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956, before its merger with Bombay State on 1 November 1956.

Rajkot was reincorporated into Gujarat from 1 May 1960.
